Custom Abutments

The abutment decides whether the final crown looks like it grew there or was screwed in. We design them from your scans, matched to the emergence profile your temporary built.

What we offer & who it is for

For practices and laboratories outsourcing custom abutment design and production on all major platforms, with documented component choices.

Practical guidance for your prescriptions

  • Margin depth beyond ~1.5 mm subgingival makes cement removal unreliable - consider screw-retention.
  • Send the scan body used (brand and type) - third-party copies are a common source of misfit.
  • Zirconia-on-Ti-base hybrids combine gingival aesthetics with a metal interface: the standard aesthetic-zone choice.
  • Request the design preview if margin position is critical - it is confirmed before milling, not after.

Reference figures are widely accepted industry values for the material/system class - case-specific parameters are confirmed at design. Reviewed by the Istar case coordination team.

Indications & limits

Component availability is verified before acceptance: discontinued or unusual interfaces pause the case until confirmed.

Emergence profile transfer depends on receiving the temporary in situ scan (or its design file).

What to submit with your case

  • Implant system and platform
  • Scan body brand, model and generation, included in the upload
  • Temporary in-situ scan or design file (for profile transfer)
  • Retention and cementation plan
  • Component preference: original or compatible

How the case is made & checked

Intake verification: interface vs scan body data vs component availability
Abutment design from your scan with profile data
Design preview for approval
Milling/production; component logged with lot number
Seating check on the verified analogue; independent release

Each abutment ships with the component specification - brand, platform, alloy, lot number - and seating verification on the correct analogue.

Production time & shipping

Runs on the standard workflow once intake verification completes; verification pauses the clock only when a component question is open. Shipping is separate.

Real cases

Ti-base zirconia crown with profile transfer

Emergence profile carried from the approved provisional's in-situ scan into the Ti-base design; accepted at first seating.

Frequently asked questions

Titanium-base or full custom abutment?
Ti-base hybrids are the default for aesthetic zones; full titanium is the robust posterior choice. We recommend per case and confirm with you.
Which materials are available for custom abutments?
Titanium, zirconia (on a titanium base or full zirconia where indicated), and hybrid zirconia-on-titanium designs. The choice depends on the platform, the aesthetic demand and the occlusal space - we confirm at design stage.
How do you match my scan body and system?
We keep verified libraries for the major systems and confirm the scan body type at intake. Unusual platforms are checked against the base catalogue number you provide before any design work starts.
Can the abutment and crown come as one assembly?
Yes - we deliver the custom abutment with the crown fitted, either screwed as one unit (zirconia bonded to Ti-base) or as separate abutment + crown. Tell us your delivery preference on the prescription.
What if the abutment margin needs adjusting chairside?
Send the case notes or a photo - if the margin design was at fault, the remake falls under our warranty. We also offer a design preview on abutment cases so margin position is confirmed before milling.
