How to Send a Digital Case (Checklist)

Short answer: scans of both arches plus bite, a complete RX, implant component data where relevant, and reference photos with a shade tab. Here is each item in detail - and why labs ask for it.

Scans

  • Prepared arch - full arch, not just the preparation; margin clarity is everything. If subgingival margins are involved, capture what is capturable and say so.
  • Opposing arch - the antagonist defines occlusion; " antagonist on file" from a previous case is acceptable if you say which case.
  • Bite - a scan or record in centric for anything beyond a single posterior unit.

The RX form

  • Restoration type and material (or ask for a recommendation).
  • Shade, including stump shade for discoloured preparations.
  • Margin design and cementation intent.
  • Contact tightness and occlusal preferences if you have them - otherwise the lab's default applies, and defaults are what cause "the last lab did it differently" remakes.

Implant cases: the three extra items

  • Implant system and platform (diameter and connection).
  • Scan body brand, model and generation - and the scan body data itself in the upload.
  • Component preference: original or validated compatible, stated in writing.

Reference photos

  • Frontal smile, retracted view, close-up of the target teeth - with a shade tab in frame, taken in daylight. A photo without a tab cannot be used for a guaranteed shade match; it will only ever produce a confirmed assumption.

File hygiene

  • One folder per case, named with case number and patient code (a case number is enough - no patient names required).
  • Version control: if you resubmit, mark the new version explicitly. Wrong-version milling is the most preventable error in digital dentistry.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly will the lab confirm my case?
Istar confirms completeness, scan usability and component match on the working day the files arrive - and the production clock starts at that confirmation, not at your original email.
Do we need to send patient names?
No. Use case numbers - it is better privacy practice and it is all we need to keep records aligned.
